This article appeared a century ago as the first message from the editor of Port Pirie’s Recorder.
The Recorder had just been changed in name at the time this appeared, with ownership had been taken over by Mr J.E. Davidson, who lived in Port Pirie for many years.
Mr Davidson was well connected in Broken Hill and Port Pirie and as we can see from his Christmas editorial retained a keen interest in both.
The young man would later become famous for establishing the afternoon newspaper The Adelaide News, which propelled Rupert Murdoch towards becoming the most powerful figure on the world’s media stage.
Today the mega-giant News Corporation still retains the name of the tabloid newspaper he established, in lasting tribute to the man behind this message.
