“There’s a lot of optimism for the future”
He may not have been born and bred here but he is as one-eyed about the place as he is about his other passion, his AFL team, Port Power. Dr Andrew Johnson continues to spruik the benefits of Port Pirie and the region at conferences and speaking engagements across Australia.
He was not sure what to expect when he came to live in Port Pirie with his young family about eight years ago as the CEO of Port Pirie Regional Council. What he discovered was that Port Pirie was a great, friendly place to raise a family.
Dr Andrew and his team at Port Pirie Regional Council actively work to improve the region and develop strategies to attract businesses and residents into the area to improve economic growth.
Two major projects being delivered by Council at the moment are the CBD Rejuvenation project and the Port Pirie Regional Sports Precinct.
“There are changes to every aspect of Port Pirie. Change seems to be sweeping across the place from new small scale businesses opening, other larger businesses undergoing upgrades, to significant community infrastructure being built and Nyrstar’s transformation,” commented Dr Johnson.
“You don’t have to travel too far to see change in Port Pirie!”
Now all that is needed is a change in attitude. For the belief to take hold in the community and further afield that this region will lead the way towards a positive future. You don’t have to convince Dr Andrew – he’s already there.
“There’s a lot of optimism for the future. Many businesses are considering our region to set up shop.
Port Pirie is a vibrant, family-friendly community that has all the city services but with the spectacular backdrop of the Southern Flinders Ranges,” he said.
“Why wouldn’t you come here?”
